The Indiana Territory...Olde Vincennes...

On July 4, 1800, the Indiana Territory was formed from the western part of the Northwest Territory. It covered what is now Illinois, Wisconsin & Indiana, as well as parts of Minnesota & Michigan. The population included 12,000 native Americans and 6,000 settlers.

Vincennes was selected as the Capital. William Henry Harrison was the first Governor. His Virginia style home was called Grouseland.

Vincennes University, older than the state of Indiana, was founded as "Jefferson Academy" in 1801 by Harrison. Harrison later became the 9th president of the USA. Vincennes is recognized as one of the most picturesque college campuses in the midwest. It is blanketed with seasonal flowers. Over 100 acres of beautiful landscape & brick walkways.
